Life is Not a Gerbil Wheel

Shoreline

“This isn’t the life I thought I’d lead.”

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard some variation on that theme, I’d be a rich woman. And, being completely transparent, I’ve heard it many times from my own mouth.

I am in awe of people who know from an early age what they were put on this earth to do. Doctors. Actors. Teachers. Mechanics. Artists. Writers…..

And then there’s the rest of us. We know we’re good at certain things. We have gifts and talents. But the problem is that those gifts and talents could be applied in myriad ways. Many of us go to college, select a major, graduate and if we’re lucky we find a job that has a slight resemblance to our major and maybe even our passion. We work at it. We make a living. Many settle down and start families and it’s all ok.

But it’s not great.

And at some point it begins to feel like a gerbil wheel. Round and round and round we go.

And it feels empty and unfulfilling.

Many of us reach this “aha” moment early. More of us reach it later — at a time when we could/should be focused on planning our retirements, we find ourselves thinking, “Wait. I am NOT fulfilling my purpose. I’ve worked all these years at a job, but I KNOW there is something else I’m supposed to be doing. I want to make a difference. I want my work to mirror my passion. I want to come home from my job and know that what I did mattered in the world.”

We want to find our PURPOSE.

It is my sincere belief that each and every person on this planet has a unique purpose and is capable of contributing something unique. Let me be clear: I don’t think everyone is destined to be a rock star celebrity or world-renowned change maker. I DO believe that every single person on this planet was put here by a God who knows the very thing they were created to do and contribute to the world.

The challenge is in a society that overly values celebrity and rock star status, the quiet contributions of most of us feel insignificant — and therefore many make the mistake of thinking their lives and talents have no value.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

I know this journey far too well. In what I will generously term the “back 40” of my life, I finally feel that I am BEGINNING to step into what all that God created me to be and do. And I SO get it when I hear the refrain of “There HAS to be something more!!!”

There is. I promise.

And, I’ll be honest. It often helps to have someone who can step into your life and say, “I can help.”

So here it is: “I can help.”
